Highly effective vaccines based on the capsular polysaccharide coat are available against meningococci belonging to serogroups A, C, Y, and W are available. More recently ‘sub-capsular’ antigens have been licensed for use in meningococcal vaccines, which can protect against multiple serogroups, but these do not cover all meningococci.
